전날의 『악의 꽃』과 시의 영토

본 연구는 어느 시인이 이전 시대, 혹은 제 동시대 작가들에게서 받은 영향 속에서 자신만의 독창적인 시를 꽃피우는 과정을 살펴보기 위해, 19세기 프랑스 작가인 생트-뵈브와 보들레르에게서 이러한 문제를 검토하였다. 이 두 작가는 동시대에 활동하면서, 나이나 경력 면에서는 차이를 보였기에 선배와 후배 작가로 영향 관계를 형성하였으나, 낭만주의가 시도했던 서정과 소재라는 측면에서는 분명 공통적인 특징을 보여준다. 삶이 점차 현대적 모습으로 변모하던 시기에, 시의 영토는 고갈되었고 더 이상 시가 시대와 세상에 새로운 가치를 보여주기 어려울 것이라는 전망 속에서 두 작가는 자신이 마주한 상황을 시로 그려나갔다. 그들은 당시 시인들이 처했던 ‘폐적’의 상황 속에서 도시의 새로운 시적 대상들을 바라보았던 것이다. 그러나 과거의 이상에 여전히 제 시선을 고정시켰던 생트-뵈브의 서정은 당대의 삶을 꿰뚫고 그 속에서 새로운 삶의 가능성을 발견하는 데까지 이르지 못했다. 그렇다면 선배 작가에게서 도시를 바라보는 시인의 시선을 물려받은 보들레르는 어떤 식으로 ‘새로운 꽃들’을 발견했는가? 본 연구는 두 작가가 교류했던 서신을 검토하고 영향 관계가 드러나는 시를 분석하면서 이러한 물음을 따라가 보았다.
Abstract
This study starts from the question of the means by which a poetic oeuvre blossoms through the influences on a poet of previous or contemporary writers. To examine this problem, two 19th century French writers, Charles-Augustin Sainte-Beuve and Charles Baudelaire, are considered here. These two writers, while working in almost the same period, were of different ages and had different career trajectories. However, they had formed the imaginary affiliations through which mostly the previous of more well-established writer influenced the junior writer, and therefore they clearly display several common features in their poetry in terms of the subject matter that romanticism had addressed and in their urban lyricism. In the period when modernity was encroaching on the life and the domain of the poetry was considered to be exhausted, these two writers faced the prospect of it being no longer possible to unearth new aesthetic values of poetry in the world. In this pursuit, they cast the gaze of “the poet disinherited” upon new urban poetic objects. However the lyrical work of Sainte-Beuve, in which he still fixed his gaze on the dream of the past, did not achieve the insight of the poetic or engender new values in the context of the life of that era. So, how did Baudelaire, who inherited the poetic gaze to scan the city, find the “new flowers?” This study addresses that question by examining the correspondence between the two writers, and by analyzing their poetry.
