포르투갈 문학의 저명한 연구가이자 번역가인 안토니오 타부키는 1991년 모국어인 이탈리아어가 아닌 포르투갈어로 『레퀴엠』을 1991년 출간하였다. 작가는 이 작품을 모국어인 이탈리아어로 쓰는 것의 불가능 했다고 하며 자신의 문학적 스승 페르난도 페소아의 언어이자 꿈의 언어, 무의식의 언어인 포르투갈어로만 가능하였다고 밝혔다. 포르투갈어는 타부키에게 페소아의 언어로 논리와 일상의 언어가 아닌 문학, 무의식, ‘애정과 성찰’의 언어이다. 포르투갈어는 또한 타부키에게 소리가 없는, 물리적 실체가 없는 언어로 기억과 망상을 소환하는 언어이다. “문학이 해야 하는 것이 바로 불안하게 하는 것이다. 의식을 평온하게 하는 문학은 가치가 없다”라는 타부키의 철학은 익숙한 일상의 언어, 안정적이고 논리적인 모국어를 무의식, 꿈, 기억, 환영의 언어의 외국어라고 인식하는 지점에서 발생한다. 따라서 이 논문에서는 성인이 되어 포르투갈어를 습득한 타부키가 이작품을 포르투갈어로 집필할 수밖에 없었던 것에 주목하며 궁극적으로 ‘창조적 지성’이라는 그의 철학에 언어의 문제가 어떻게 개입되었는지 살펴보았다.
Abstract
Antonio Tabucchi, a distinguished researcher and translator of Portuguese literature, published his novel Requiem (1991) in Portuguese. The author stated that it was impossible to write this work in his native Italian language. He insisted on Portuguese, the language of his literary teacher Fernando Pessoa, and the language of his dreams and unconsciousness. Portuguese is Pessoa’s language for Tabucchi. It is not the language of logic and everyday life, but of literature, unconsciousness, affection, and reflection. It is also a language without sound and physical reality, the one recalling memories and delusions. “What literature has to do is to get nervous. Literature that calms consciousness is not worth it.” Thus, Tabucchi’s philosophy arises from the point of view where the familiar everyday language and the stable and logical mother tongue become the foreign language when compared to the language of unconsciousness, dreams, memories, and illusions. Therefore, this paper examines how the problem of language was involved in Tabucchi’s philosophy of “creative intelligence,” noting that the author, who had acquired Portuguese as an adult, had no choice but to write his novel Requiem in Portuguese.
