안토니오 타부키는(1943-2012) 이탈리아 현대 문학을 대표하는 작가이기도 하지만 시에나 대학과 제노바 대학에서 포르투갈 문학, 스페인어 문학을 연구한 저명한 연구자이기도 하다. 작가로서의 문학 활동과 학자로서의 연구는 서로 유기적인 영향을 미치며 타부키가 이탈리아 뿐 아니라 현대 서구사회를 대표하는 지식인으로 성장하는 밑거름이 되었다. 그 중에서도 2010년 노벨 문학상을 수상한 페루 출신 작가 마리오 바르가스 요사와의 문학적 우정과 교류는 타부키가 현실을 인식하고 그것을 문학으로 형상화하는데 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 특히 타부키는 이데올로기적 정당 활동을 근간으로 하는 참여 작가, 지식인의 프레임을 벗어나, 현대 사회에 작용될 수 있는 새로운 지식인의 역할과 기능을 ‘문학’의 가치를 재조명하며 제시한 작가인데 이 철학을 구체화하는데 있어 마리오 바르가스 요사의 관계는 매우 긴밀한 영향을 미쳤다. 따라서 본고에서는 타부키가 집필한 자료에서 마리오 바르가스 요사를 언급한 텍스트를 중심으로 다루면서 타부키의 문학적, 사회적, 개인적 상황과 비교 분석하여 타부키가 포스트모더니즘 이후 새로운 환경에서, 또 문학과 현실사이에서 지식인의 역할을 제시하는데 미친 바르가스 요사의 영향력을 살펴보았다.
Abstract
While Antonio Tabucchi (1943 - 2012) was one of the foremost authors of modern Italian literature, he was also a renowned scholar of Spanish and Portuguese literature at the Universities of Siena and Genoa. Tabucchi’s literary work as an author and research as a scholar were closely intertwined, providing a foundation for him to become one of the foremost intellectuals in not only Italy but the western world. One notable instance is his friendship and literary exchanges with Mario Vargas Llosa, the Peruvian author and 2010 Nobel laureate in literature, which played a major role in shaping how Tabucchi perceived reality and constituted it in his literature. In particular, Tabucchi went beyond the frame of the participatory writer and intellectual whose basis was on ideological party activism, and proposed new roles and functions of the intellectual that could be made applicable in modern society by rediscovering the value of literature. The formulation of this philosophy was crucially influenced by his relationship with Vargas Llosa. Thus, in this study we focus on texts by Tabucchi that make mention of Vargas Llosa and comparatively analyze these alongside Tabucchi’s literary, social, and personal circumstances, thereby examining Vargas Llosa’s influence on how Tabucchi set forth the new role of the intellectual, amid a new environment after post-modernism and in the realm between literature and reality.
