본고에서는 한자문화권에서의 한자교육의 의의와 그 필요성에 대해서 살펴보았다. 이 작업은 단순히 학교교육에 한정해서 한자ㆍ한문 교육을 논의하던 것에서 벗어나 동양과 우리의 문화를 제대로 파악하고 세계화의 문제에 대응하기 위한 목적에서 이루어졌음을 강조하고 싶다.한자문화권 안에서 우리가 2000년 이전부터 한자를 도입하여 문자생활을 영위해 왔지만 우리 나름대로의 독자적 문화와 전통을 만들어 온 것은 자랑스러운 일이지만 우리의 문화를 지나치게 내세워 외래문화와 대립적인 구도로 관계를 설정하기보다는 긍정적이고 상호보완적인 관계 속에서 우리의 문화를 새롭게 인식해야 한다. 우리 문화의 실체는 한자로 표기된 한문전적에서 찾을 수 있으므로 앞으로 한자ㆍ한문 교육은 체계적이고도 본격적으로 이루어져야 한다. 올바른 세계화를 이루기 위해서도 한자ㆍ한문 교육이 필요하지만, 우리 문화를 창조적으로 계승하고 후세들이 우리 문화에 대해 자부심과 긍지를 가지게 하기 위해서도 한자ㆍ한문 교육의 필요성이 절실하다.

Chinese character cultural area And education of Chinese characterPark, sung kyu攀 Korea University, Professor ／parksk@korea.ac.kr攀攀Even though China and other oriental countries have their own geographical and cultural characteristics and originalities because of their everlasting history, since they held a Chinese character in common, these countries formed a cultural community which is called Chinese character cultural area. So, China and many other oriental countries did think and express based on their own cultural tradition or unique characteristics; after all, because Chinese character had been used to spell all those things, cultural exchange among these countries might be done naturally. That`s why it`s easy to guess that they have similarities in the way of living and thinking in common. Oriental spirit and oriental ethics, which we call these days, are the essence of unique spiritual values of orient which have been molded by long sustained relationship of cultural exchange. The work of examine the education of Chinese character in the Chinese character cultural area is the way of finding the cultural smilarities of oriental countries.
