초록
This research investigates whether highly advanced Korean EFL learners can be invulnerable from the "same translation effect" (Jiang, 2002, 2004), which was demonstrated by the findings that L2 learners responded to words with the same L1 translation (STP) faster and more accurately than words do not share the same L1 translation (DTP). The present study further examines whether the syntactic category (nouns or verbs) is related to the effect. The results suggest even native English speakers exhibited a delay in DTP items to judge their relatedness. Despite this finding, the RT difference between the two conditions was greater among EFL learners. Moreover, the significant ER difference between STP and DTP was observed only in EFL learners, suggesting that they responded more accurately when the two words shared the L1 translation. With regards to the effect of word class, EFL learners do not seem to have any processing advantage for a certain syntactic category. Nevertheless, the descriptive data suggest that EFL learners showed the larger discrepancy between STP and DTP in nouns than in verbs.
