Review of the comic in Pansori : referring to an essay on the comic by Baudelaire

Pansori is one of the representative Korean traditional performing arts which is based on comic narrative. Pansori has been known for its proper comic rhetoric. My article aims to reveal what types of rhetoric Pansori uses and what aesthetic effects they bring about, especially in the comic sens. I referred to the famous article, "De l'essence du rire" written by Baudelaire in order to analyse aesthetic quality of the comic aspects of Pansori. One of the most important specificities characterizing poetics of Pansori is that its discursive-structure does not always reflect in a symmetrical way the narrative-structure. In other words, discursive-structure very often takes comic figure instead of dramatic figure in a tragic phase of the narrative development in Pansori. Pansori's narration has a tendance to transform a tragic situation into a comic description by means of a rhetoric which induces 'reification' or depersonalization. Such a comic is the very "grotesque absolute comic" Baudelaire elaborated in his essay, "De l'essence du rire". My article consists in handling a cross between Pansori's comic rhetoric and Baudelaire's comic theory so that it contributes to promoting communication between two cultures that Pansori and Baudelaire represent respectively .
