Toward this aim, the study classified the p’ansori audience that existed historically and also examined what type of audience would be necessary today. In the first half of the 19th century, p’ansori was performed outside, and mostly its audience was an enjoying audience. There was also a serious audience that could distinguish myŏngch’angs as enjoying p’ansori performance. In the second half of the 19th century, there was a serious audience that listened to p’ansoriin a room to feel the artistic beauty of it. After the 20th century, there was a wait-and-see audience as p’ansori was performed on a theatrical stage. They were satisfied with just watching it far away without participating in it. In modern times, there are also kwi myŏngch’angs. They are the serious audience that properly knows p’ansori and knowledgeably evaluates it. In modern times, the wait-and-see and serious audiences are the mainstream. In order to regain the fame of p’ansori, it is needed to revive the enjoying audience and incorporate their attitude into the modern audience.
