Abstract
This paper discusses Robert Altman’s film Short Cuts (1993), focusing on the major symbolic motifs that appear in its narrative. This film is based on nine short stories and one poem of a famous American realist writer Raymond Carver. It, however, is not faithful to the original form of Carver’s stories, and radically mixed them and recreated an entirely new long narrative. Although some people hailed it as a masterpiece to be added to the prestigious oeuvre of this great American director, others criticized it for its distortion of another American master’s original works. Numerous opinions against this film highlight the fact that this film lacks the “depth” of the characters that the original stories have. My question is whether such “depth” in literature can be embodied in the same way in a different medium such as film, and more importantly, whether the depth is the only aesthetic measure to evaluate an artistic creation. In this film, I find the filmmaker’s originality on the surface, not in the depth, of the film’s narrative, and trace the meaning of the surface through the two motifs “mask” and “flow.” I argue that the literal and metaphorical masks that the characters wear, and the editorial and sensory flows of the film, both of which are newly created by Altman, lead to the realistic and effective portrait of the lives in the city of LA.
