초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze the short stories of Raymond Carver from the perspective of Deleuze's affect. Influenced by counterculture that emerged in the 1950s, minimalism aims to achieve maximum effect with minimum expression. Carver's work reflects this characteristic of minimalism well, and because of such a characteristic, uncertainty or indeterminacy in meaning causes difficulties in understanding his works. The indeterminacy of meaning in Carver's works can be found in the approach to change that occurs at the microscopic level regarding the relationship between people/ objects. The characters in Carver's work, seen through Deleuze's concept of affect, show aspects of change through their relationship with the surrounding objects. Carver's work does not present the existing value, but expresses ‘intensity’. It occurs in a pre-linguistic dimension, and the strength that causes qualitative change is the power that produces difference. The point where these changes occur is the realm before language and is also the space where complex forces act. The indeterminacy of meaning, which is characteristic of Carver's work, can be said to stem from the expression of the power of life that occurs in the dimension before language.
