세기전환기 ‘J-호러’는 당시 일본 사회가 겪고 있던 역사적 이행의 과정을 날카롭게 포착하고 논평해 냈다. 기본적으로는 1990년대 말 버블의 붕괴와 함께 갑작스럽게 맞닥뜨린 탈-성장의 국면이 초래한 공포와 관련된 영화들이지만, 보다 심원하게는 1970년대 이후 진행된 탈-근대로의 전환이 축적해 온 감정적 지층의 일부이기도 하다. 그러므로 이들을 사로잡았던 공포의 역사성은 ‘탈-근대’와의 관련 속에서 규정되는 것이 타당하다. 이 글은 <큐어(キュア)>(1997), <검은 물 아래에서(仄暗い水の底から)>(2001), <주온(呪怨)>(2002)을 주된 대상으로 삼아 J-호러의 탈-근대적 공포의 양상과 의미를 탐구하고 비평한다. 구체적으로는 이 영화들이 공유하는 세 가지 특징에 초점이 맞춰지는데, 첫째, 불황기의 노후화한 도시의 폐허와 같은 살풍경, 둘째, 그 속에서 살인을 저지르는 인물들이 보이는 미망의 주체성, 셋째, J-호러 특유의 아이-괴물들이 바로 그것이다. 이들은 각각 탈-성장 시대의 도래와 근대 일본의 종언, 이러한 현실과의 대면이 준 충격과 꿈과 이상의 소멸이라는 탈-근대적 세계의 조건이 초래한 착종된 현실감각, 그리고 타자와의 연결을 거부하는 분리에의 성향에 관련된다. 한편, 세기 전환기 이후 일본의 경험이 한국, 중국 등과 같은 인접 국가들도 겪어왔거나 겪게 될 역사적 궤적일 수 있다는 점에서, J-호러가 구축한 탈-근대의 공포를 분석하고 논평하는 작업은 동아시아 차원에서도 여전히 유효한 정치적 의미를 가진다.
Abstract
The “J-horror” movies in the last turn-of-the-century sharply captured and commented on the process of historical transition that Japanese society was undergoing at the time. While these films basically are related with the horrors caused by the sudden confrontation of de-growth due to the bubble collapse in the 1990s, they are also a part of the emotional strata composed of the transitional processes to post-modernity that has been underway since the 1970s. Therefore, the historicity of the horrors that occupied them can be defined in relation to postmodernity. This article explores and critiques aspects and meanings of postmodern horror in J-horror films, focusing on Cure (キュア, 1997), Dark Water (仄暗い水の底から, 2001), and Ju-on: The Grudge (呪怨, 2002). Specifically, it focuses on three features that these films share: firstly, the grimy ruins of an aging city in the midst of a recession; secondly, the void subjectivity of the murderer-characters; and thirdly, the child-monsters characteristic of J-horror. Each of these relates to the advent of the post-growth era and the end of modern Japan, symbolised by the decaying city; the shock of confrontation with this reality and the sense of dislocation brought about by the conditions of a post-modern world in which dreams and ideals are lost; and the autistic tendency towards separation that resists connection. Analysing and commenting on the postmodern fear constructed by J-horror has important critical implications also for East Asian international politics, as the Japanese experience since the turn of the century may be a historical trajectory that neighbouring countries such as S. Korea and China have also experienced or will experience.
