Abstract

The theme of the “island” represents a privileged place in the poetic and critical universe of Salvatore Quasimodo’s (Nobel Prize for Literature, 1959) and runs through his entire literary experience, with a radical evolution over the years. In particular, this paper will offer a reading of the poem “Cavalli di Luna e di Vulcani”, published in Erato and Apòllion in 1936, according to the interdisciplinary approach of the most recent Island Studies and Mediterranean Studies (Predrag Matvejević, Mediterranean: a cultural landscape, 1999). In the poem Cavalli di Luna e di Vulcani, the image of the island emerges as a mythical place, a distant Eden immersed in the memory of the poet, who is instead forced to live in a contemporaneity that is dominated by violence, barbarism and war. The land where the poet was born, the Sicily of his origins, immersed in the Mediterranean Sea rich in history and tradition, becomes a symbol of the purity and beauty of Nature. The poet becomes a migrant, an exile, forced to move away from his homeland: hence the theme of loneliness and distance. Sicily is transformed from a geographical and real place into a mythical landscape and ends up representing for the poet-at the height of the lyric under consideration-an alternative world, a refuge where he can forget the evil of living that oppresses Twentieth-century man.
