스파게티 웨스턴과 홍콩 무협영화, 만주웨스턴과 검술영화: 초국적 관객과 치안의 대상으로서의 영화

1966년 세르지오 레오네의 <황야의 무법자 A Fistful Of Dollars>는 서울에서만29만 명이라는 관객을 동원했다. <황야의 무법자>가 촉발시킨 이탈리아 웨스턴붐 직후인 1967년 홍콩 쇼브라더스의 <대취협 大醉俠>(호금전)이 <방랑의 결투> 라는 제목으로 개봉, 파상적인 흥행기록을 세웠다. 이 영화들의 인기는 곧 만주웨스턴과 검술영화라는 두 장르영화를 낳았다. 이 영화들은 그 이전의 어떤 영화들과도 비교할 수 없는 강도 높은 비난에 시달렸다. 이탈리아 웨스턴과 ‘백해무익한 중국 검객물’은 1968년 이래 정기적으로 수입 금지, 합작금지 처분의 대상이 되었다. 이탈리아 웨스턴과 홍콩 무협영화에 쏟아진 비난은 고스란히 만주웨스턴과 검술영화로 이어졌다. 이 한국산 영화들에 대한 언사 역시 잔혹, 잔인, 저속의 어휘들이 동원되었는데 다만 한 가지 차이는 ‘국적불명’이 ‘가짜’라는 어사를 대신하고 있다는 점이다. 잔인, 잔혹이 이런 영화들에서 드러나는 폭력에 관한 염려라면, 국적불명은 자기표상으로서의 내셔널 시네마적인 것과의 길항을 보여주는 것에 다름 아니다. 왜 폭력과 내셔널한 것의 약화에 대한 염려가 이순간 등장한 것일까? 이 소란스러운 언설들, 과잉된 담론들은 내셔널한 바운더리를 넘어서는 공통관객, 이곳과 저곳에 존재하는 이 관객들의 존재와 이들의 취향에 어필할 수 있는 장르의 양식이 도착한 바로 그 분기점의 소동이었던 것은아닐까? 이 폭력과 여기에 대한 열광이야말로 전후 국가 체제로부터의 탈주라는1960년대 중후반의 세계사적 사건과 이 영화들이 만나는 지점일 것이다. 검술영화와 만주 웨스턴의 유행은 1970년대 초 사그라들었지만 이 영화들이 발견한 관객은 지속되었다. 이 영화들의 인기, 그에 대한 비난은 1960년대 중후반이라는 시간에 처음으로 희소한 여가시간에 저렴한 오락으로서의 영화를 보러올 수 있는 집단, 도시 저임금 노동자들이 영화 관객으로서 성립되었다는 것을 알려준다. 혹은 이 영화들을 통해서 이 집단은 드디어 가시화되었다고 말할 수도 있으리라. 이 영화들의 폭력에 대한 우려는 바로 이 가시화된 집단에 대한 두려움을 보여주는 것에 다름 아니다. 스파게티 웨스턴과 홍콩 무협영화, 만주웨스턴과 검술영화는 바로 이 집단을 가시화한 첫 번째 영화적 사건으로 읽혀져야한다.
Abstract
In 1966, Sergio Leone’s A Fistful Of Dollars drew an audience of 290,000 in Seoul. In 1967, shortly after the Italian western boom sparked by A Fistful Of Dollars, Hong Kong’s Shaw Brothers’ Come Drink with Me(King Hu) hit the Korean box office. The success of these films spawned two Korean-made genre films: the Manchurian Western and Korean Swordplay movie. The market responded enthusiastically to these movies, but they were also met with harsh criticism. The vocabulary of accusations included fake, cruel, brutal, and vulgar. The vocabulary of this condemnation reveals a concern about the violence these films provoked and the erosion of what is national. I wonder if this consistent condemnation was the tumult at the very juncture of the existence of a common audience beyond national boundaries, an audience that existed here and there, and the arrival of a genre form that could appeal to their tastes. The fad for Korean Sword films and Manchurian Westerns faded in the early 1970s, but the audiences they found persisted. The popularity of these films, as well as the criticism they received, points to the establishment of a group of moviegoers who first emerged in the mid- to late 1960s: urban low-wage workers who could afford to go to the movies as cheap entertainment in their rare spare time. Or, through these films, this group has finally become visible. The concern about violence in these films is a reflection of the fear of this group. Spaghetti Westerns, Hong Kong martial arts films, Manchurian Westerns, and swordplay films should be read as the first cinematic events that made these groups visible.
