Abstract

Fredric Jameson defined Third World narrative as a “national allegory,” highlighting the combination of the abstract formal patterns of Western novel construction with the raw material of peripheral social experience. However, his framework is limited to the temporality of colonialism and tends to subsume diverse historical expressions of collectivity—distinct from bourgeois individualism—under the single category of the Third World. By shifting focus from the modern capitalist world-economy, which has dominated world literature debates, to the longer durée of the “world-empire,” this essay reconsiders (semi-)peripheral East Asian literature through a historical lens that incorporates not only the economic base but also political and cultural superstructures. In the East Asian world-empire context, the Third World is recontextualized through imperial structures and principles, shaping a particular form of collectivity. This collectivity is not imperialism, but a system of exchange (mode B) between obedience and protection (as theorized by Karatani Kojin), supported by the ideology of the mandate of heaven and sustained through bureaucratic governance. The Korean film Kingdom: Ashin of the North exemplifies how the zombie narrative—as a formal element of world literature—is combined with aspects of world-empire. It demonstrates how these structures persist in a region that was once central to the world-empire and is now a (semi-)periphery of the modern world-system. This highlights the importance of approaching world literature through a broader historical framework and more complex contextual understanding
