An Innovative English Education Program for a Local University

Many high school graduates with higher level of English proficiency tendto enter universities in the metropolitan areas where they have morechances to be exposed to actual English communication with people fromother countries, which make them more motivated to improve theircommunication skills in English. Those in the lower tier of Englishproficiency who enter local universities find themselves relatively lessprivileged to enhance their communication skills in English. In order toovercome this initial gap in English proficiency, local universities try todevelop various programs for developing students’ communicativeabilities. This study introduces a case of such innovation in GeneralEnglish education at a local university. Based on recommendations fromprevious research a new curriculum for general education was developedand implemented for a semester. Effectiveness of those courses wereexamined through a students’ survey. As a result of the survey, the studyrecommends a variety of courses which are useful in making universitycampus a global arena for fostering students’ international mind-set. (168)
