Abstract

This study aimed to explore the instructional effects of learners' corpus consultation of formulaic expressions in L2 writing. The Experimental Group (EG) studied the lists of formulaic expressions, while the Control Group (CG) learned the lists of individual words through learners' corpus consultation. After eight weeks of instructions, the EG and CG's writing processes and qualities were investigated in terms of native-like fluency (writing fluency) and native-like selection of language use (writing quality). The two groups showed a significant group by time interaction in native-like selection with noticeable outperformance by the EG. Native-like fluency showed no significant group by time interaction, but the CG used more awkward expressions between pauses than the EG. In addition, this study found that native-like selection and fluency do not necessarily develop concurrently in L2 writing, suggesting that native-like fluency is not a sufficient condition for achieving native-like selection in L2 writing.
