한국인 중학생의 영어 어휘 학습 책략 연구

초록

본 연구는 한국 중학생 407명을 대상으로 영어 어휘 학습 책략에 대한인식과 실제 사용 정도에 대해 알아보았다. 또한 어휘 평가를 통한 어휘능숙도 수준(상위 95명, 중위 205명, 하위 107명)에 따라 어휘 학습 책략에 대한 인식과 사용 정도에 차이가 존재하는지도 살펴보았다. 본 연구를통해 얻은 주요한 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저, 한국에서 영어를 외국어로 학습하고 있는 중학생들의 경우, 가장 많이 사용하는 어휘 학습 책략은 입으로 소리 내어 반복하기, 손으로 쓰기 등 기억강화책략 중 인지책략 이었다. 가장 적게 사용하는 책략은 기억강화책략 중 기억책략으로어휘를 어근이나 접사 등 문법적 지식을 통해 학습하는 것에는 익숙하지않는 것으로 나타났다. 하지만 참여 학생들의 경우 전반적으로 어휘 학습 책략을 활발하게 사용하지는 않는다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 어휘수준에 따른 어휘 학습책략의 차이가 존재하는지 살펴본 결과, 어휘 수준이 높은 학습자일수록 다양한 어휘 학습 책략을 많이 사용하는 것으로드러났다. 이는 어휘 수준이 높은 학습자가 맥락에 적절한 책략 사용에더 능숙하다는 것을 보여주는 결과라 할 수 있다. 본 연구 결과를 기반으로 어휘 학습과 관련하여 교사 의 역할 등에 대해 논의하였다.

Abstract

This study examines Korean middle school students’ use of English vocabulary learning strategies. A total of 407 Korean middle school students were participated and assigned to high(N=95), intermediate(N=205), and low(N=107) groups based on their vocabulary size test scores. Overall, the participants of this study did not actively use a diverse range of vocabulary learning strategies, and rather tended to rely on a couple of strategies such as bilingual dictionary use, speaking out new words repeatedly, and writing down new words repeatedly. The results also demonstrated that the high group students used wider ranger of strategies more frequently compared with those in intermediate and low groups, suggesting that higher level of students are more likely to use appropriate strategies across diverse learning contexts. However, intermediate students were more willing to get help to know the meaning of new words from their teachers and peers than high and low group students. Based on the findings, the roles of teachers and learners were discussed and pedagogical implications were made.
