초등 영어 학습자의 동사 오류 양상과 오류 분석을 통한 문법 지도가 쓰기 능력에 미치는 영향

본 연구의 목적은 영어 작문에서 나타나는 초등 5학년 학습자들의 동사 오류를 분석하고 오류 분석을 통한 문법 지도가 쓰기 능력에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 파악하는 데 있다. 본 연구에는 서울의 초등학교 5학년 3개 학급의 학생 55명이 참여했다. 이 중 동질도가 비슷한 두 집단을 설정하여 한 학급은 비교 집단으로, 한 학급은 실험 집단으로 설정하였다. 비교 집단의 경우 교과서 중심의 일반 수업을 진행한 후 영어 작문을 실시하였다. 실험 집단은 비교 집단의 동사 오류 분석을 토대로 추출된 문법 요소를 수업 시간에 지도받은 후 영어 작문을 실시하였다. 이를 통해 발견한 초등 5학년 학습자들의 영어 동사 오류 양상은 시제와 문장 유형에 따라 다양하게 나타났다. 또한 문법 지도를 받은 실험 집단에서 동사 오류가 줄어든 것으로 보아 오류 분석을 통한 문법 지도가 쓰기 능력에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 이 연구는 학습자들의 오류 양상에 대한 이해와 초등 영어 지도 단계에서의 문법 지도의 필요성에 대해 고려해볼 수 있다는 점에서 의의를 갖는다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore the aspects of grammatical verb errors represented in the English writing of fifth graders and to investigate the effect of grammar instruction in which the result of error analysis was reflected on their writing abilities. The total of 55 fifth-grade students from three classes in an elementary school in Seoul participated in the study. One class was assigned as the comparative group from which the nature of verb errors has been drawn from students’ writings. The experimental group assigned to another class received grammar instruction focusing on the aspects of verb use on which students made errors. The findings of the study revealed that the aspects of verb errors the fifth grader produced were varied by tense and sentence type. Moreover, it showed positive effect of teaching grammar through error analysis on their writing abilities in that their verb errors has been decreased after the focused grammatical instruction. Lastly, this study calls for a need to understand aspects of students’ grammatical errors in their writing and underscores the significance of grammar instruction for elementary school students.
