Abstract
This study aims to investigate the effects of indirect corrective feedback on immediate grammatical error correction and sentence-level writing ability. The participants of this study were 100 sixth graders divided into four groups with four different types of indirect corrective feedback including code, code plus example, underline, and underline plus example. The five aspects of grammar frequently in error (i.e., verbs, modals, possessives, subject-verb agreement, singular and plural nouns) were selected as focal ones. In order to explore the immediate effects of different types of indirect corrective feedback, their first writings and corrected writings were compared. In addition, the pre-writing test and post-writing test results were quantitatively analyzed to confirm whether the teacher’s feedback could help the participants improve their grammatical knowledge about the five focal grammar areas and their sentence-level writing skills. The results of the study suggested that the effects of indirect corrective feedback made positive impacts on correcting errors and improving writing skills in all groups. However, overall code-groups yielded better results than underline-groups. Furthermore, the effects of providing examples in feedback were statistically meaningful in most of the grammar areas, which indicates that providing feedback with examples had a positive effect on immediate grammar error correction.
