Abstract
This study aimed to find whether the rising F0 curve can occur in word-initial syllables in Korean and to determine the reason behind this. Thus, a total of three experiments with different syllable structures were conducted, and the F0 variation of 450 word-initial syllables was analyzed. According to the results, the Korean word-initial syllable, which starts with the low-pitched phoneme, may appear to be rising, not due to the diphthong, but to the sonorant consonant coda. In other words, if a Korean word-initial syllable begins with a low-pitched phoneme and ends with a sonorant consonant coda, it will have a rising F0 curve.
