To establish an effective training paradigm for a computer-assisted language learning system that enables non-native learners to exploit native-like perceptual cues for identifying length contrasts, e.g.,consonant length, in the Japanese language(hereafter, Japanese length contrast), perceptual training were conducted to investigate the identification accuracies of Korean-native listeners before and after intensive perceptual training. Before the perceptual training, we examined how Korean listeners’ perception of Japanese length contrast is affected by contextual factors including presentation contexts and speaking rate variation. After that, we investigated the effectiveness of training. The present study indicated that training with vowel-length contrasts improved the overall performance of identification accuracies for Japanese phonemic length contrasts by Korean-native listeners. Moreover, Korean listeners showed a mild tendency to adapt their criteria according to changes in speaking rate after the training. However,the training using vowel contrasts only did not improve the identification of consonant length contrasts. These results partly coincide with those of Sonu et al.,(2011). These results suggest that the perceptual training improve non-native listeners’ ability to perceive a new, difficult-to-learn L2 phonetic contrast although the improvement was only to a limited extent
