Abstract
This study aims to clarify the syntactic and semantic characteristics of sentences containing "noun+uchini”. Based on the corpus, this study examined both the characteristics of “uchini” clause identified in previous researches, and the characteristics of the words and phrases that are frequently used, focusing on the expression patterns in practical examples. In case of nouns, there are hardly few examples in which the narrative changes of the subjects in the main clause are described unlike the “verb + uchini”. As a result of examining "noun + uchini" does not show relative noun, that is, specific point in time, but the time for most nouns are decided by a starting point or a particular event. In terms of semantic characteristics, there are some examples in which only "the work described in the main phrase is finished within a period" is conveyed, but there are many examples in which the meaning "before too late" or "within a short period”. As pointed out in Backhouse and Quackenbush(1979) et al., it is confirmed that such semantic characteristic is associated with lexical nature of the vernacular verb, in other words, one’s will or feebleness. Especially, 67.31% of all “time noun + uchini” main phrases describes uncontrollable situation by the speaker, and in such case, most sentences depict situation in the main phrase has happened “within a short period of time. In the case of numbers, especially unspecified numbers, it was confirmed that the meaning of "within a short period of time" was emphasized. In the underwater corpus, “action noun + uchini” hardly appears and in such case, the change of subject's emotion and sense is described in the main clause that it becomes similar to “verb + te-iru + uchini”. In the case of “state noun + uchini”, even if the same clause is changed to “in such state”, the sentence is natural, and the confrontation with the time not included in the “uchini” clause is not shown. Therefore, it is considered only temporal concurrency exists.
