Study on speech level shift in Korean and Japanese sports news articles : Focused on functional classification of the end of sentence expression

This study examined the frequency of speech level shifts between predicate and non-predicate. Ending expressions of sentences in a total of 200 sports news articles including 50 articles each from Chosun Daily, Dong-A Daily, Yomiuri Shimbun, and Asahi Shimbun, between September 1, 2012 and October 31, were classified into predicate and non-predicate. Based on the research, the study focused on different patterns of ending expressions in Korean sports news and Japanese sports news. The results found that Yomiuri Shimbun’s sports section is composed of approximately 74.2% of predicate sentences and 25.8% of non-predicate sentences. Asahi Shimbun sports news consisted of 64.4% of predicate sentences and 35.6% of non-predicate sentences. Both Japanese newspapers used non-predicate more often and had higher shifts than Korean newspapers. They also used non-predicate more freely than Korean newspapers. About 96.4% of Chosun Daily’s sports news used predicate sentences, showing little shifts. Dong-A Daily also used 94.3% of predicate sentences in its sports news. Non-predicate sentences in Korean newspapers were used in limited occasions, such as complementing explanation in previous or following sentences, or quoting someone’s words.
