Abstract

This study examined students' perceptions of the high school credit system before its full implementation, focusing on English classes. Through surveys and interviews, we analyzed its impact on English education and explored ways to improve the system. The findings highlight the need for a comprehensive review of assessment methods, particularly in elective courses where performance and absolute assessments are applied. Ensuring fairness and efficiency in evaluation is crucial to reducing student burden. Given the wide range of proficiency levels in English, introducing a no-grade system and level-based classification is necessary. Additionally, offering more practical and diverse elective courses can help students learn English in a way that aligns with their career goals. The decline in students choosing English should prompt a fundamental re-evaluation of the English education system rather than being accepted as a trend. Ultimately, the high school credit system, combined with modernized English education methods, is expected to drive meaningful improvements in English education.
