Abstract
This study aimed to compare and analyze peer assessment, self-assessment, and teacher assessment in Korean speaking evaluation to explore the potential of peer and self-assessment as substitutes for teacher assessment. For this purpose, 21 intermediate-level learners from a Korean language education institution at a university were asked to perform self-assessment and peer assessment after a role-play presentation, while two professors with over 20 years of experience in Korean language teaching participated in the teacher assessment. The evaluation tools were based on speaking assessment criteria suggested in previous studies, with a focus on the characteristics of role-play. These were categorized into accuracy, appropriateness, and fluency, comprising a total of 10 assessment items. The analysis of the evaluation results showed that teacher assessments were relatively lower than self-assessments and peer assessments, and that the only area where peer or self-assessments could substitute for teacher assessments was in the fluency category. The findings indicate that in some areas of speaking evaluation, peer assessment can replace teacher assessment. Based on these results, further research could explore the incorporation of peer assessment into future speaking evaluations.
