Abstract
This study investigates the use of an AI-based English-speaking application(app), PLANG, within a college extracurricular English program. It examines the impact of the app on participants’ self-directed English learning readiness (SDLLR) and affective attitudes, and further explores how these variables relate to participants’ speaking performance and the amount of time spent on learning. Participants’ perceptions regrading the use of the app were also investigated. A total of 46 college students participated in this study, with 27 assigned to the experimental group utilizing the app and 19 to the control group. Pre- and post-program surveys were administered to measure SDLLR and affective attitudes toward English speaking, while speaking performance was measured using the app’s internal assessment criteria. Additionally, data on participants perceptions were collected through open-ended survey responses. The results indicated both groups showed a slight increase in SDLLR; however, the difference was not statistically significant. Among the affective variables, only motivation showed a statistically significant improvement. The experimental group demonstrated a meaningful enhancement in speaking performance, particularly among learners with initially low levels of SDLLR. Content analysis of the written responses from learners revealed generally positive perception of the app use. Nevertheless, some participants reported dissatisfaction with the limited autonomy in content selection. Despite the study’s limitations and need for further research, the findings suggest that AI-based speaking applications can facilitate speaking development and learner motivation even in minimally structured, self-paced learning context.
