초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the strategic approaches to war that Japanese people who remember World War II took through Harp of Burma, a popularly known children’s war novel published shortly after the defeat of Japan, and the aspects of war stories that have been reproduced until now. The author’s intention in writing Harp of Burma was to enable ‘generations who experienced the war to understand the war individually by themselves and to live a new life based on their understanding.’ Since the book was released in Japan, it has been used as a tool for reorganizing the country’s ‘national memory’ of war. Harp of Burma replaced a ‘war story’ with a ‘touching story’ by introducing key󰠏words including ‘music,’ ‘tears,’ ‘comradeship,’ ‘condolences,’ ‘Buddhism’ and ‘peace’ to understand the war. The resonance of this ‘touching story’ for most Japanese people helped form a popular understanding of the war. This study raises the question of whether this novel is indeed suitable as a story with an antiwar message of peace, and examined ways to handle war problems in postwar Japan by paying attention to ‘a fiction’ that is activated at the point where this war story meets the Japanese public. Through this examination, this study discussed the unnatural formation of the collective memory of war among Japanese people right after the defeat of Japan, and how the Japanese public enjoyed a ‘touching story’ reproduced by the media.
