Abstract

Cheophaesineo was a Japanese textbook for Chosŏn missions to Japan. During the Chosŏn Dynasty era, this textbook was used by Sayeokwon. We investigated and analyzed all the "YEI" and "YOI" that appear in Cheophaesineo, and examined the background to the revisions, etc., to see how they were used in the Edo period. As a result, we discovered that there was a certain degree of differentiation in the use of "YEI" and "YOI" in the original edition, similar to the way in which there is a distinction between "casual speech" and "formal speech" in modern Japanese. In addition, the Edo-language 'i˗i' changed from 'e˗e' to 'e˗e' after the middle of the Edo period, the same as the previous upper words, and although both 'e˗e' and 'i˗i' existed in the early stages, all of them became 'i' in the revised books. It is thought that the reason for the change was that the content of the textbook was not the spoken language of the commoners, but rather a dialogue between officials from Japan and Korea in a public setting, and so "YOI" was more appropriate than "YEI" . However, it is thought that the influence of the language of the samurai guards involved in the revision is a major factor. This suggests that the change from "ゑい(YEI)" to "よい(YOI)" is not linked to the evolution of "ゑい(YEI)" itself. In addition, the corresponding word "둏다" shows a transition to a palatal sound, as in "둏다˃죻다˃좋다," with the t (ㄷ) being lost, as in the original edition "됴tjo" (45 cases, 98%) ), the revised edition "됴tjo" (32 cases, 64%), and the reprint edition "됴tjo" (12 cases, 30%). In contrast, the palatalization of the t sound progressed, as shown by the original edition "죠cjo 1 case (2%), revised edition "죠cjo" 18 cases (36%), reprint edition "죠cjo" 28 cases (70%). Thus, it is clear that the t-palatalization is progressing, and it can be said that almost all of them had been t-palatalized around the time of the reprint edition.
