한일 양국의 독도 영유권 인식의 간극 -상호주의 관점에서 독도영토학 정립을 중심으로-

Abstract

In 1905, the Japanese Empire determined Dokdo to be an island without an owner and took measures to incorporate it as Japanese territory under international law. There are records that Dokdo was Korean territory before 1905. Japan’s annexation of Dokdo was an act of aggression against Korean territory. However, Japan is currently not giving up its claim to Dokdo sovereignty. What is the direction for resolving the Dokdo issue? Korea-Japan relations should not deteriorate because of Dokdo. This study presents a solution. It proposes the establishment of a theory of “Dokdo territorial studies.” We must comprehensively and three-dimensionally understand Dokdo sovereignty. To this end, it organizes the differences in positions between Korea and Japan into five areas: ① “Differences in cultural perception of territory,” ② “Differences in perception of the geographic and historical origins of Dokdo,” ③ “Differences in perception of Dokdo’s international legal status,” ④ “Differences in political and diplomatic perception of the Dokdo issue,” and ⑤ “Differences in perception of alternatives and prospects for the Dokdo issue.” More specifically, the positions of both Korea and Japan are clearly discussed for each item.
