Abstract

This paper is a follow-up to Zhang and Koga (2024) and aims to clarify the influence of the source languages of Kyōwa-go using the "positioning Analysis" method developed by the authors. The purpose of this study is to test the results of that paper by expanding the scope of the analysis and to demonstrate that what has been classified as "Kyōwa-go" is actually composed of two distinct types. The analysis targets 115 sentences of Kyōwa-go, selected from two sets (64 postcards) of "military postcards" illustrated by Arai Kazuhisa, as well as sentences from Nakaya Shikaji's From Sino-Japanese Joint Language to Proper Chinese. Through this analysis, we aim to gain a clearer understanding of the overall structure of Kyōwa-go. The results showed that the utterances from the military postcards were distributed between the first and third quadrants on the "positioning Map," with a noticeable bias toward the first quadrant. In contrast, the utterances from Nakaya were also distributed between the first and third quadrants, but with a bias toward the third quadrant. Neither set of data was positioned in the fourth quadrant. This evidence suggests that the military postcard utterances reflect a strong Japanese influence, while the Nakaya utterances show a stronger Chinese influence. Furthermore, the analysis suggests that Kyōwa-go that incorporates Japanese-derived vocabulary while maintaining Chinese grammatical structures is extremely rare. The strong Japanese influence in military postcards is likely due to their function as a propaganda tool for Japan. In contrast, the Kyōwa-go sentences presented in Nakaya's work reflect a stronger Chinese influence, as Nakaya aimed to correct Kyōwa-go into proper Chinese, although some Japanese influence remains. While a clear definition of Kyōwa-go has yet to be established, the results of this positioning Analysis have helped shed light on its linguistic structure and binary nature.
