Abstract
This study examines the semantic characteristics of the modern Japanese particle 'bakari(ばかり),', with a focus on the concept of 'temporal discontinuity', which has not been extensively studied in previous research. The article compares 'bakari' to 'dake(だけ)' to highlight the semantic differences between the two expressions. This study examines how 'bakari' combines with specific verbs like ‘gaze(眺める)’ and ‘think(眺める)’, rather than focusing on contrasting features like ‘bakari’s plurality or subjective evaluation compared to ‘dake.’ This is because, in such cases, existing explanations of mere plurality or subjective evaluation are insufficient to fully clarify the semantic difference between the two expressions. To address this limitation, this study performed a thorough analysis of specific example sentences, focusing on ‘temporal discontinuity.’ The results confirmed that ‘bakari’ does not only indicate repetitive actions but also implies an intermittent, discontinuous temporal feature involving the alternation of action cessation and resumption. This discontinuity is closely related to the ‘plurality’ recognized as a representative feature of ‘bakari,’ while also connecting to the ‘subjective evaluation’ and ‘individual perspective’ discussed in previous studies. Compared to ‘bakari,’ ‘dake’ focuses on a specific action and a consistent temporal pattern. As a result, this study has educational implications because it systematically elucidates ‘temporal discontinuity’ using concrete example analysis, an aspect that has received insufficient attention in previous research. Both expressions are translated as '~만/뿐' in learners' native languages, making them difficult to distinguish by rote memorization alone. Using the contrasting concepts of discontinuity and continuity presented in this study allows for a broader, intuitive understanding of the subtle nuanced differences between the two expressions, such as the distinction between ‘空ばかり眺めている’ and ‘空だけ眺めている.’ This study's scope is limited as it focuses on combinations with specific verbs like 'to gaze' (眺める) and 'to think' (考える). Future research should examine the semantic differences between 'bakari' and 'dake' in adjective- and noun-predicate sentences.
