Abstract

This study examined the Japanese-language newspapers "Chosun Jiho" and "The Fusan Nippo" published in Busan during the Japanese colonial period, from a linguistic perspective. The study focused on Joyo Kanji, or the commonly used Chinese characters, in the titles, subtitles, company names, product names, and advertising copy of articles from "Chosun Jiho" and "The Fusan Nippo" available in the DATABASE OF KOREAN HISTORY. The study analyzed the spelling patterns and temporal changes of these Joyo Kanjis and compared them with those in modern Japanese to identify their distinctive features. Joyo Kanjis were used more often in advertisements than in articles. Joyo Kanjis observed from 1914 to 1944 include "强, 燈, 兩, 萬, 絲, 鹽, 體, 蟲, 齒, 畵(が)", while those that were rarely used for a short period of time include "舊, 圖, 獨, 来, 勞, 囯, 㝍, 榮, 戰, 畵(かく)̀". Joyo Kanjis used in the 1910s include "强, 関, 教, 舊, 台, 働, 灯, 両, 万, 滿, 発, 糸, 辭, 薬, 驛, 塩, 榮, 圓, 医, 雑, 鐵, 体, 虫, 歯, 號, 畵(が)". Joyo Kanjis used in the 1920s include "經, 国, 囯, 氣, 氕, 斷, 當, 讀, 耒, 賣, 變, 寶, 実, 児, 予, 剤, 学, 畵(かく), 会", and so on. Joyo Kanjis that began to appear in the 1930s include "図, 獨, 樂, 來, 勞, 戰, 斈". Joyo Kanjis that began to appear in the 1940s is "㝍". Joyo Kanjis in modern Japanese, such as "佛, 寫," were not used, while the characters not found in modern Japanese, "氕, 囯, 㝍, 斈", were found.
