초록
The novelist Soseki Natsume (1867-1916) is appreciated as a people‘s writer who represented the modern times of Japan. This appraisal on him is basically due to the excellence of his works, but also because of his prophetic criticism against the contradictions in the Meiji Age. He went on his way as a writer and civilization critic in the midst of conflicts between his dark view of Japan's modernization on the one hand, and his strong affection and pride in Japan's growing power in the midst of the age's contradictions, on the other hand. His early works described intellectuals positively. This image reflected his literary ambition and determination before he set out as a fulltime writer. After the Great Treason in 1910, his works concentrated on the description of humans' inner conflicts and psychology. This was due to the government's suppression inflicted upon all of Japan's philosophical and cultural circles, which happened after the Great Treason, and he remained silent to this. Therefore, those intellectuals in his Later Triad were all practically powerless and bore the element of self-denial. After describing intellectuals this way, he won mental composure freed from intellectuals' false conceptions when he reached Michikusa..
