Abstract

This study examines the representation of women's rights in the poetry of Goto Ikuko, focusing on proletarian poems published from the 1920s to the 1930s. Goto had been active as a poet even before marrying Uchino Kenji and published her first poetry collection in 1927 after relocating to colonial Korea in 1925. From this period, she began to address the issue of female laborers' rights as a central theme, and it has been confirmed that after being deported to Japan in 1928, she expressed a strong voice on women’s rights through poems such as Navy Blue Body and For the Soviet Union, published in the feminist magazine Women's Art. To investigate why her work did not receive significant recognition at the time, this study compares Goto’s poems with two poems by her contemporary, Nakano Suzuko. The analysis reveals that Goto’s poetry tends to obscure the poet's personal presence and lacks an explicit sense of militant struggle. Nevertheless, her consistent engagement with the theme of women's rights and her active involvement in editing proletarian literary magazines alongside Uchino are notable achievements that deserve recognition. This study concludes that her works require further detailed examination in light of the social conditions of the time and from the perspective of female poets.
