Abstract
This paper provides a detailed description of the meaning of passive sentences derived from reflexive constructions in Japanese. As a result of the analysis, it became clear that the passive sentence in question expresses a notable change in the state or position of the object of action, or a change in the attribute of the object of action. This analysis differs from conventional analysis in that it provides a unified explanation using the concept of affectedness(受影性), which is 'the referent of the subject is affected by the action of agent'. From the analysis in this paper, we get the implication that passivization of reflexive constructions is usually impossible not because the corresponding active sentence expresses reflexivity(再帰性), but because the passive sentence in question does not express affectedness.
