Abstract
In many ways R. Schumann, a central figure of musical romanticism, represents the typical romantic composer with his emphasis on self-expression, his strong lyricism, and a lot of interest in musical associations. In the 1830's he had composed 3 piano sonatas, sonata in f# minor. Op. 11, sonata in f minor, Op. 14 and sonata in g minor, from which his early musical style and distinct creative musicality could be perceived more than from his 3 piano sonatas, Op. 118 written for his daughters in 1853. Sonata g minor consists of 4 movements: the first movement, composed of the exposition with 1-92 bars, the development with 93-196 bars, the recapitulation with 197-293 bars and the coda with 294-318 bars, is sonata-allegro form like the Classical sonata style; the second movement with 1-61 bars is the variation form; the third movement with 1-64 bars is scherzo form like the Classical sonata style; the fourth movement with 1-336 bars is rondo form like the Classical sonata style. Schumann' piano sonata in g minor seems to follow in the steps of the Classical sonata style in it's first, third and fourth movements except for it's second one which takes the form of variation instead of lied form in the second movement of the Classical sonant. In a general way Schumann's piano sonatas seem to be regarded as works lacking in his own distinct creative musicality of art and it's most important cause is said to be deficient in the formal logic. It is true that from the viewpoint of classical piano sonata they are not satisfied with the structural unity and developmental technique of movements owing to various sorts of shortage in Schumann's sonatas. But I suppose that it is worth analyzing his romantic sonatas under the emphasis on the romantic aesthetics and his peculiar approach to sonata.
