Abstract

The repatriate narratives during the Liberation Period of Korean themselves reflect the individuals' desire to establish their identity as “Chosun people” and show that a certain national ritual process should be involved in fulfilling such a desire. Reestablishing one's identity as the subject of building the nation facing the confusing Liberation Period of Korean was an urgent task and a journey of statement. Calling individuals the subjects of building a new Chosun and turning their repatriations into narratives as they tried to reestablish their identities for themselves represent the process of establishing an identity. But there is hierarchical difference according to class, vocation, and gender of the repatriate subjects in the process of their “becoming Chosun people” described by the repatriate narratives. As for gender difference, for instance, the repatriate narratives by men and women from Japan did not abolish the gender-inspired hierarchical relationships between the two groups but instead made the relationships even more solid. In the position of those who completed their repatriations, men led women's efforts to repatriate. Such repatriate narratives by women not only represent the process of their becoming Chosun people, but also closely depict the women's situations in which they needed to “become Women(mothers).”
