자족적인 ‘시의 왕국’과 ‘국민시인’의 상관성 -서정주의 ‘현재의 순간성’과 ‘영원한 미래, 과거’

‘국민시인’ 혹은 ‘시의 정부’라는 미당 서정주의 호칭은 해방 이후 미당의 시적 영향력의 크기를 나타내는 말이면서 동시에 미당의 시적 기원과 그가 한국시에서 차지하는 상징적인 의미를 모두 함축하고 있다. 초기 미당의 개인적 고뇌와 자기분열 의식이 해방 이후 ‘국민시인’으로 호명될 만큼의 보편성, 영원성으로 상승하는 과정에는 식민지 말기 미당 서정주의 의식과 체험, 의지, 판단이 크게 작용하고 있는데, 특히, 「시의 이야기」와 친일행적이 보여주는 ‘순수, 보편, 객관적 현실’에 대한 그의 생각은, 이후의 국가, 현실에 대한 시적 양면성의 한 전형에 해당된다. 외부의 압도적인 현실과 억압을 ‘객관적인 것’으로 받아들임과 동시에 ‘보편성’과 ‘개인적 감각, 시적 형이상학’ 사이의 괴리를 극복하기 어려웠던 그에게 ‘현실’이란 “견뎌내야만 하는” 긴 역사 속의 잠시 어려운 ‘한 순간’이었고, 따라서 그의 시적 순수는 열악한 ‘현실’이 아닌 오직 ‘과거와 미래’에만 존재하는 것으로 인식된다. 특히, 식민지 체험과 전쟁체험은 이런 미당의 ‘순수시 이념’을 역으로 강화시키는 중요한 대타항이었고, 그가 자신의 ‘순수시이념’과 ‘민족적 이상세계’라는 ‘보편 가치’를 쉽사리 하나로 통합시켜버릴 수 있었던 근거였다. 현실의 혼탁함이나 미완, 결핍에 비한다면, 과거와 미래는 현실의 결핍을 보상하는 하나의 이상으로 그의 앞에 현현한다. 이 점에서 미당에게 ‘전통’은 과거이면서 동시에 아직 “도래하지 않은” 시적 이상의 구체적 현현에 해당된다. 이처럼 미당이 영원성을 통해 ‘과거’와 ‘미래’를 동일성으로 묶을 수 있었던 것은, 그의 ‘순수시’가 현실을 배제한 ‘자족적 공간’ 속에 ‘시의 왕국’을 세움으로써 새로운 ‘시의 모델’을 만들 수 있었던 것과 같은 맥락에서 가능했던 것이다.
Abstract
This treatise tried to examine and reassess personal history of Seo Jeong-ju, who make the concepts of 국민문학(國民文學, Kookminmunhak, national literature) and 국민시인(國民詩人, Kookmin si-in, national poet) to the inside thing or consciousness. We, also, in this, need to remind that the concepts of ‘Kookminmunhak’ and ‘Kookmin si-in’ is a logic on cooperation with the ‘Empire of Japan’ in Colonial age and also, general demand for constructing a Nation State after 1945. The inversive thinking and sorrow of Korean Colonists who cooperated with Japan as imagination of Nation State is remained in the origin of Cooperation Literature. This imagination and yearning to Nationalism is more strengthened by ideologies of ‘building an independent country’ after independence from Japan. Accordingly, titles of Se Jeong-ju as ‘Kookmin si-in’ or ‘a government of poetry’ show Se Jeong-ju's influence and symbolic meaning in Korean modern poetry. In the process what Seo Jeong-ju's personal agony and divided ego is sublimated to universality and eternality as call as Kookmin si-in after independence, is very connected with Seo Jeong-ju's consciousness, experience, will, judgement in the late colonial age. Especially, his thought about ‘pureness and universality, an objective reality of life’ showed in “a talk about poetry” is a his standard type of poetic ambivalence about a nation, a country, a reality. He accepts overwhelming conditions and suppressions as objectivity. The real is a suffering moment in long time history to him who could not conquer the gap between the universality and personal sense or poetic metaphysic, so he feels that his poetic purity exists only ‘past or future’. The experiences of war and colonial age are contrapositive things to his poetic idea. They make Seo Jeong-ju's idea of 순수시(純粹詩, Sunsusi, pure poems) be stronger than before. Actually, it is the answer how he can make ‘Sunsusi and national ideal world’ something with general value, easily.
