HDTV드라마 <돌아온 일지매>의 서사 기법 고찰 - 이야기 전달 방식을 중심으로 -

디지털 시대의 다양한 매체(media)의 등장은 TV드라마의 서사 기법에 근본적인 변화를 요구하고 있다. 본고는 이러한 문제에 대한 해결 방안 모색을 위해 HDTV드라마 <돌아온 일지매>의 서사 기법을 고찰하였다. 그 결과 <돌아온 일지매>가 전통적인 ‘이야기꾼’을 활용한 ‘액자 구조’로 이루어진 작품임을 확인할 수 있었다. <돌아온 일지매>의 새로운 서사 기법은 기존의 천편일률적인 TV드라마의 서사 기법과 구조에 변화를 가져오는 계기가 될 것이며, 동시에 ‘디지털’로 대변되는 다매체 시대의 예술로서 TV드라마의 존재 방식의 변화를 예고하는 징후라 할 수 있다. <돌아온 일지매>가 기존의 ‘일지매’ 서사(敍事)와 달리 ‘의적’을 잉태하는 시대의 혼란스러움과 비극적인 운명을 극복하고 ‘영웅’으로 거듭 태어나기까지의 과정에 집중하면서 인간적 면모의 ‘일지매’를 강조한 것은 분명 주목할 만하다. 또한 디지털 기술이 발달하고 매체(media)가 다양해지면서 TV드라마의 천편일률적인 서사 기법에서 벗어나 영상예술로서의 새로운 존재 방식을 모색해야 하는 시기에 <돌아온 일지매>에서 시도된 새로운 서사 기법은 높이 평가할 만하다. 그럼에도 불구하고 <돌아온 일지매>는 인간적 면모에 집중된 일지매의 영웅적인 활약이 시청자의 기대치에 미치지 못했던 내용적인 특성과 시청자의 감정 이입을 방해하면서 객관적 성찰을 요구하는 서사 기법이라는 형식적인 특성 때문에 저조한 시청률을 기록했다. 당대 대중의 바람을 충족시켜주지 못하는 TV드라마의 서사 기법은 아무리 시청자의 성찰을 유도하는 좋은 의미를 담보한다 하더라도 근본적인 한계가 있을 수밖에 없기 때문에 절반의 성공으로 만족해야 할 것이다. 그러나 주제적 측면이 아닌, 기법적 측면에서 <돌아온 일지매>가 성취한 결과물은 디지털 시대 TV드라마의 새로운 위상을 정립하는 계기가 될 것이다. 이 지점에서 일상적으로 향유하는 대중예술에서의 관습적 표현을 지양하고, 낯설음에서 비롯할 시청자의 거부감을 무릅쓰고 새로운 매체(media)에 적합한 TV드라마의 새로운 표현 방식을 보여준 HDTV드라마 <돌아온 일지매>의 방송극사적인 의미는 만만치 않을 것이다. 이제 남은 문제는 텍스트 외적인 측면에서 새로움에 대한 낯설음, 그로 인한 거부감을 극복하고 시청자의 ‘참여’를 어떻게 이끌어낼 것인가이다. 새로운 매체 환경에 적합한 ‘소통’과 ‘참여’ 방식에 대한 고민이 필요한 때이다.
Abstract
The appearance of diversified media in the digital era requests fundamental changes in narrative techniques in TV dramas. The study examined the narrative techniques applied to the HDTV drama <Iljimae Returned> in an effort to resolve the problem. As a result, it has been confirmed that <Iljimae Returned> was structured as a frame based on a traditional story teller. A new narrative technique that was applied to <Iljimae Returned> will bring about changes in narrative methods and structures of stereotyped TV dramas and herald modification of the mode of existence of TV dramas as a genre of arts in the multimedia era characterized by digitalization. Unlike the narration of previous ‘Iljimae,’ <Iljimae Returned> focused on the process of a chivalrous robber being reborn as a hero while overcoming the confusion and tragic destiny of the era and emphasized humanistic Iljimae. In addition, as digital technologies are advanced and media are diversified, it has been requested to depart from stereotyped narrative techniques of TV dramas and perceive the TV dramas a new visual art form. At this juncture, <Iljimae Returned> deserves to be highly recognized for applying a new narrative technique. Nonetheless, <Iljimae Returned> failed to meet viewers' satisfaction by focusing on humanistic chivalrous robber and gain sympathy from viewers while recording a low rating in the wake of its narrative formalities that require objective reflection. Although narrative techniques of a TV drama aim to induce viewers' reflection, they cannot avoid fundamental limitations especially if the drama itself fails to satisfy viewers, and it would result in a half success. However, what the drama <Iljimae Returned> has achieved in terms of techniques instead of themes, would help figure where TV dramas stand in the digital era. In this regard, the HDTV drama <Iljimae Returned> carries significance in the broadcasting history in that it refrained from adopting customary expression of popular art and introducing a new mode of expression for TV dramas befitting new media while braving viewers' aversion. In this regard, it is necessary to figure how to overcome strangeness and resultant aversion and how to induce viewers to take part. It is time to give a deep thought into how to communicate and take part in the new media environment.
