이 연구의 목적은 사진 자료를 통해 20세기 초 여성교육에 나타난 제주여성의 근대성을 살펴보는 데 있다. 근대란 진보, 이성, 자율의 편에 서있는 것이기도 하지만, 반(反)근대적인 규범과 가치의 수용까지 동반하고 있다. 특히 성별 상징성(gender symbolism)에서 볼 때, 20세기 초 여성교육은 오히려 근대적인 삶의 모순과 갈등, 모호성과 아이러니를 상징한다. 그러나 지금까지 대부분의 연구들은 20세기 초 여성교육이 여성의 근대적 자아각성과 식민지지배에 대한 저항을 표출하는 단초가 되었음을 강조해 왔다. 이 연구에서는 20세기 초 여성교육의 핵심이 여전히 전통적인 현모양처의 이념에 머물면서 근대와 전통의 긴장과 갈등 속에서 전개되고 있음을 밝히고 있다.
Abstract
This study focuses on the modernity of women in the structuring of the early 20th century Jeju women’s education through photographies. To be modern is to be on the side of progress, reason, autonomy; by contrast, paradoxically on the side of is to be antimodern norms and values. Especially in terms of gender symbolism, the early 20th century women’s education comes to stand for the contrast and conflict, the ambiguities and ironies of modern life. But previous studies have emphasized the fundamentally basis of modernity that requires self-awareness and the protest of the Japanese colonial rule. I emphasize that Jeju women’s education focussed on educating the future mothers and wives of traditional home based on Confucianism. Thus I try to understand modernity in Jeju women’s education terms, that women’ education was often considered ‘modern’, yet is their focus was centered on ‘a good wife and wise mother’.
