이광수는 <무정>(1917)을 통해 문학적인 성공을 거두기 전 중국과 러시아의 시베리아를 여행한 경험을 가지고 있다. 그는 이후 자신이 경험했던 젊은 날의 여행을 각기 다른 결말을 가진 「어린 벗에게」와 <유정>으로 형상화하였다. 결론적으로 말하자면 「어린 벗에게」는 자유, 열정, 희망, 기개 등의 단어로 지칭할 수 있는 사라진 젊은 날의 꿈이며, <유정>은 시간과 공간의 제약과 풍화를 견딜 수 있는 공동체(민족)의 꿈이다. 사멸과 불멸 혹은 특수화와 보편화라고 할 수 있는 재현의 방식에서 이광수가 선택한 것은 후자이다. 그는 언제나 자신과 문학을 민족과 국가라는 보편에 편입시켰다. 하지만 아이러니하게도 이광수의 문학이 지금도 끊임없이 연구되고 언급되는 까닭 중 하나는 그의 문학적 선택에서 발생하는 기인한 모순과 굴종 때문이다. 그는 불멸의 문학을 지향했지만 정확히 절반의 성공만을 거둔 것이다.
Abstract
Before enjoying success with his literature, Mujeong(1917), Gwang-Soo Lee went on a travel in China and Siberia, Russia. He illustrated the experience of his early days in To My Little Friend and Yujeong with different endings. To sum up the stories, To My Little Friend is a disappeared dreams of the youth which can be explained with words such as freedom, passion, hope and spirit and Yujeong is the dream of the community (nation) which can make people bear time and space limitation and weathering. Death and immortality or specialization and generalization, He chose the latter for illustration. He always incorporated himself and his literature into more generalized concepts, nation and race. However, ironically, one of the reasons why his literature has been continuously researched and mentioned is contradiction and submission generated by his literature choice. He pursued immortal literature, but he achieved exactly half of what he wanted.
