Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the authenticity and excellence of the Songaksan landscape through investigation and analysis of the landscape resources of the area of Songaksan Mountain, and to provide basic data to prepare measures to conserve, manage, and utilize the Songaksan landscape. Songaksan Mountain, located on the southwestern coast of Jeju Island and the southernmost border of the country, functions as a focal point for the entire landscape, and offers excellent landscape resources such as the sea and islands, the coast of southwest Jeju Island, the volcanic cone of Songaksan Mountain, and the sunrise and sunset of Jeju’s southern sea. In addition, Songaksan Mountain has been recognized as an excellent landscape resource in the southwestern part of Jeju Island since ancient documents and old maps, and has a high historical value as visitors can experience a section of history in person. Songaksan Mountain is a place with a volcanic topography of a double crater, which is rare in the world, and has high academic value. The land of Songaksan Mountain is mixed with private and state-owned land, and the development pressure of private land is high, leading to concerns that could damage the landscape of Songaksan Mountain. Based on the value of the scenery of Songaksan Mountain investigated in this study, it can play a role in strengthening the foundation for conserving Songaksan Mountain scenery and landscape resources by reviewing the designation as a nationally designated cultural heritage and conservation area.
