Abstract

This study explores the humanistic value of nine scenic sites on Jeju Island designated as national heritage. We examine historical documents, old maps, and paintings to analyze their historical, aesthetic, and spiritual values. A scenic site can be considered a type of heritage landscape, where humanistic value is preserved in human memory and imagination. This value is also reflected in place names, myths, folklore, literature, and art. In the late Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), these nine sites on Jeju Island served as a source of powerful inspiration for the scholar-official class, which was captured in their writings and paintings. Additionally, some scenic sites on Jeju Island function as sacred places, holding spiritual value rooted in indigenous myths and legends. Consequently, these nine scenic sites can be seen as landscapes that preserve the collective memory and culture of the local population. In the human mind, the dichotomy between natural and cultural, visible and invisible, or tangible and intangible elements of a landscape is not always clear. This is especially true for scenic sites, where intangible humanistic values are reflected in the tangible natural landscape. In the field of world heritage, this type of landscape is specifically classified as an “Associative Cultural Landscape.” Sites listed as World Heritage Associative Cultural Landscapeare highly praised for their significant contribution to identifying and protecting the intangible values, including the spiritual value, of indigenous peoples. To revive the culture associated with these scenic sites and pass it on to future generations, it is essential to adopt management strategies from World Heritage Cultural Landscape that include intangible heritage. These strategies should be applied to the preservation and valorization of Jeju Island’s scenic sites.
