Abstract

In this study, we analyzed the formation processes and topographic characteristics of the southern part of the Gogunsan-gun-do National Geopark, which was designated as a national geopark in 2023. The southern islands have been linked with lands and made accessible by car, enhancing accessibility and attracting expectations of increased tourist visits. While islands such as Hoeinggyeong-do Island in the northern part of the Gogunsan Archipelago reflect the characteristics of metamorphic rocks originating from sedimentary rocks of Archean Eon, the islands in the southern part exhibit the characteristics of volcanic rocks, and the formation of coastal terrain. The rocks in the southern islands are characterized by Bornhardt, with Tors found on the summits of the former mountains that now form the islands. Coastal escarpments, sea stacks, and columnar jointing formations are prominent along the coastlines. These islands are areas that became islands due to sea level rise after the last glacial period, and are characterized by tidal flat, tombolo, sand beach, and pocket beach terrains formed by marine sedimentation. However, the National Geopark's emphasis on the area's geological features has been pointed out that it has deviated from its historical context and is not suitable for general tourists. To address these issues and maximize the tourism potential of the area, thereby generating economic benefits for local residents, it is necessary to develop diverse resources to increase tourism demand, such as storytelling initiatives and the establishment of geotrails.
