Abstract

The purpose of this study is to articulate and specify the arts-sociological meaning of street dance by interpreting the Korean street dance based on the the- ory of the 'Modified Cultural Diamond' model of the sociology of the arts. To supplement the connection between the arts works and society, which emerged as a limitation of the existing 'Cultural Diamond', a supplementary cultural diamond model theory was proposed by adding a distributor system. ‘Creators (artists)’ in the supplemented cultural diamonds were the ‘street dancers’ and ‘arts’ turned out to be ‘dance battles’ and ‘dance performances’. The broadcasting media and social media are concentrated on the distribution system. In particular, given the box office success of ‘Street Woman Fighter’, the distribution was made through the broadcasting and social media, and it was expanded to the consumption by the unspecified majority of the public. Based on which, as the registration of dance academies increased, educational interest increased, and the street dance educa- tion is offered at the colleges and universities. The occupational recognition has grown from a backup dancer to an artist equivalent to a singer, and as a dancer and choreographer. Furthermore, as a result of interpreting the sociology of the arts, street dance in Korea turned out to be a shaping approach in that it affects the soci- ety with educational and occupational values. Hence, it is possible to uncover the arts-sociological meaning of the Korean street dance as a cultural diamond model theory supplemented by the sociology of the arts.
