Abstract

Neulbom School was fully implemented in 2024 and was operated primar- ily for first-grade elementary school students who are vulnerable to gaps in care. Neulbom School operates an integrated educational program that supports the growth and development of elementary school students by linking various educa- tional and care resources in the school and community outside of regular classes. Neulbom School operates the **Neulbom Curriculum**, which consists of cus- tomized and elective programs. The customized program is designed and operated free of charge for at least two hours (two periods) every day, focusing on school adaptation, play, experience, and learning activities, taking into account the devel- opmental stages and characteristics of first and second graders. On the other hand, elective programs are education- and care-oriented programs operated outside of regular classes, based on the needs and willingness of students and their parents in grades 1-6. This study aims to examine the positive impact of the play dance program, a customized program for Neulbom School, on children in the lower grades of elementary school and to explore ways to strengthen the role of the play dance program. Play education at Neulbom School should be based on the educational value of play and requires an integrated approach that encompasses physical, emotional, moral, social, creative, cognitive, and cultural development. In reality, customized programs are structured and operated with a focus on physi- cal play, cultural and artistic activities, and creative programs, rather than subject- centered learning. The play dance program at Neulbom School should be operated in the following ways. First, play dance should be designed to provide “fun” to children in grades 1 and 2. Fun is a positive element that relieves negative emo- tions such as distance and burden, and play stimulates children’s curiosity, which then motivates physical activity. These physical activities can create a virtuous cycle that leads to enjoyment. Second, play dance should be structured to encour- age communication and relationship formation among children. Modern children are accustomed to playing alone, using digital media like smartphones and tablets, or meeting friends online to play games. This environment is gradually reducing opportunities for children to connect and interact with each other. It is necessary to provide diverse play dance experiences that allow children to meet and interact with friends in person, rather than online. Through these collaborative activities, children will experience the joy of being together rather than alone, and will natu- rally form relationships through the process of talking and communicating with each other to be together. Play dance should be structured to encourage natural communication and relationship formation by allowing for a variety of play styles, such as individual play, pair play, group play, and group play. Third, play dance should foster the importance of consideration and coopera- tion. For today's children, who tend to be highly egocentric, the joy they derive from collaborative activities has profound educational benefits. For example, in play dance activities, when deciding on a turn, everyone tends to want to go first, but this process naturally fosters mutual understanding and consideration. Further- more, activities that involve solving shared missions foster cooperation and foster the ingrained virtues of consideration and cooperation. Fourth, play dance should enable “creative body movement expression based on creative thinking.” Children become immersed and focused during play, and as they discover more enjoyable and fun ways to engage, they naturally develop creative thinking. This thinking develops into expression through body movement, and through re- peated activities, children develop the ability to freely express their emotions and feelings through creative body movement. This study aims to explore the role and potential of play dance as part of a customized program for Neulbom School. Based on the educational role of play dance presented in this study, it is hoped that various play dance programs that can support the holistic growth and development of children can be developed and applied in actual settings.
