Abstract
Hardships that the main characters of narrative shaman songs experience are passage rites by nature. Through the passage rites, they take the course of being incorporated into society as adults. However, the pattern of hardship is changed depending on the sufferer of the hardship, and there may be differentiation of narration according to nation‐specific peculiarities. Therefore, the meaning of hardships may be understood in various ways. In order to investigate hardships revealed in narrative shaman songs, this study examined a total of 15 narrative shaman songs including 3 in Joseonsingayupyeon, 2 in A Study on Korean Shamanism, and 10 Bonpuris in Shaman Songs in Jeju Island. In addition, the sufferers were grouped into male adults, female adults, boys, and girls. In most cases, the cause of hardship is the absence of specific family members such as children, husband and parents. These sufferings lead the characters to explore their own roles. The main characters who have the obligation to complete the family recognize their roles and give birth to a child, look for the husband, or find the parents or save their lives. The main characters find the meaning of their existence in giving birth to children and continuing the family line. Those who were born as girls due to the shortage of sincerity are reinstated only when they give birth to a son as an heir of the family. Boys complete the family and, at the same time, take over the father’s patriarchal authority and his position. However, girls refuse patriarchal authority and position and become a heroine of a new world. While the fathers sowed seeds irresponsibly and abandoned their family, the sons find the lost family members and complete the family, serve their parents based on the value of filial duty, and create a just world through punishing evils. Girls escape from the patriarchal order, and make decisions subjectively and lead an active life. Such boys and girls are not incorporated into established society, but are creators of new order.
