Abstract

This study is to discuss Jini Hwang’s romantic love and yearning feeling poems. Jini Hwang is, in the Chosun dynasty, one of the best woman writers who sang the feeling of male and female love in her poetry. Despite of gisang, she is spoken in the highest praise by a common person, because it came from creativity that she developed heartbreaking yearning of lovers in art. Her encounter is situated at receiving the restriction of her social position in contrast with other persons’s meeting. However, she experiences meeting and parting with many lovers to try to leap over her social position in her long life. She was not frustrated the pain and torture of this meeting and parting, knew how to sublimate her love and yearning of lover into especial beautiful love. When she wrote her poetry, Jini Hwang had specific character not to restrict her feeling but to express her feeling freely to her lover. And she largely contributed to make the gentry realize the emotion of exalted and temperate love at that time. She is an artist who is many-talented person about poetry, writings, a kŏmungo, a Korean harp with six strings, and singing and dancing etc. So, in those days, the gentry fell in love with her in adoration. Among these persons, there are Byeog Gyesu who lived free life from worldly cares, and So Seyang who “was not a man if he fell a victim to the charms of a woman.” And She sublimed Seo Gyeongdeog of respectable and spiritual love into wonderful platonic love through interchanging him. She created her unique sweet sensible romantic love poem through love with these many lovers. In short, Gini Hwang’s romantic love poems have some of following characteristic. First, she express the free feeling of love to lover in her poems as it is, sang to sublime her feeling into poetry in using metaphor and a metaphorical expression. Second, she indicated her inner isolation frankly, set up overcome space in her mind. Third, she showed lament feeling for lover into universal validity to sublime yearning for lovers into personal emotion. Fourth, she always was situated at present time to emblematize man and woman’s yearning into the image of transcendency of time and space. Fifth, after she manifested yearning of lover in common words, she used specific image to unite to the lover. So, her romantic love poem is certainly the expression of her life. Therefore, her poems showed universal emotion of man and woman’s grief love.
