Abstract

Similar life trajectories often precipitate similar aesthetic forms. Although living in different times and spaces, Tang Dynasty talented woman Li Ye and Joseon Dynasty famous courtesan Hwang Jin-yi, both being women, share commonalities in life experiences, cultural psychology, and philosophies of life. Both poets pursue the true meaning of art and life, and emphasize the embodiment of subjective emotions and self-worth. Specifically in poetry creation, their unrestrained emotional expression, dreamlike poetic settings, and the portrayal of a surreal ideal realm imbued with Daoist charm(道韵) — the depiction of the “immortal realm”(仙界) — exhibit remarkable similarities. Their poetry works are more of the voices issued after staring at their own hearts, which means the initial awakening of female consciousness to some extent. A parallel study of these two female poets is helpful to make up for the characteristics of their poetry creation and literary character, and to further appreciate the poetic sentiment and elegance of women thousands of years ago. The poets, coincidentally, aesthetically transform similar life experiences into elegant and witty language, successfully showcasing the extraordinary poetic writing abilities of both and the shared cultural influence of East Asian Sinic literature.
