Abstract
In this paper, the stories about a tiger or a rabbit shown in Folk Tales of Chosun(朝鮮物語集)(1910), Collection of Fairy Tales of Chosun(朝鮮童話集)(1924), Collection of Chosun Fairy Tales(朝鮮童話大集)(1926), and Chosun Fairy Tales(朝鮮傳來童話集) (1940), all of which were written during Japan’s colonial rule of Korea (1910-1945), were studied, and their effects in terms of literary education were also studied. In the four texts listed above, there are 30 stories in which a tiger appears, 8 stories in which a rabbit appears, and 3 stories in which both a tiger and a rabbit appear. There are three stories shown in the story books listed above: A brother and a sister who become the Sun and the Moon, Ingratiated Tiger, and Tiger and Dried Persimmons, each of which appears three times. Of the stories about a tiger, 20 stories are about a stupid tiger. In the stories about a rabbit, the rabbit is personified as a trickster. The stories about a tiger feature a weak person or creature that makes fun of the tiger, especially in connection to a rabbit, which has an interesting meaning in the cultural context of the time. The rabbit represents the Koreans who seem weak but are actually wise and witty. Stories about a weak creature like a rabbit beating a strong creature like a tiger, told to children during Japan’s colonial rule, taught the children through vicarious experience not only to overcome their fear and frustration but also to authentically experience discernment, laughter and courage. Particularly in the education of children during the Japanese colonial rule period, such stories would have been very useful as a way of discussing the wisdom of the weak, who enjoy their lives and are not frustrated by the strong, by presenting a rabbit character as a role model for the teenagers.
