이 글의 목적은 『사상계』의 자유민주주의론에 끼친 기독교 신학의 영향을 재구하는 데 있다. 에밀 브루너(Emil Brunner)는 ‘하나님의 형상(Imago Dei)’이라는 표현을 중심으로 ‘정의’와 ‘질서’를 논했다. 김재준도 『사상계』에 발표한 글에서 ‘하나님의 형상’이라는 브루너 신학의 주요 개념을 통해 ‘자유’의 의의를 역설했다. 자유주의 계열의 저항담론은 대개 ‘민족’(장준하)이나 ‘민중’(함석헌)을 공동체의 구성단위로 중시했다. 그에 비해 김재준의 자유민주주의론은 ‘개인’의 존엄성과 권리를 강조한다는 점에서 독보적이며, 물론 그것은 브루너 신학의 수용과 무관하지 않다. 김재준을 비롯한 신학자들의 글이 상당수 게재되면서 『사상계』 초기에는 서구 근대화론과 기독교적 말세론이 혼재하기도 했다. 김성한의 단편소설들은 그러한 맥락에서 재독해가 가능하다. 기독교 신앙과 정치적 실천을 조화롭게 결합한 인물은 1956년 이후의 함석헌이다. 요컨대, 경제적 근대화론을 추종한 장준하는 물론 김재준 같은 자유주의 신학자와도 연대하여 반독재 민주화 투쟁의 전면에 나선 함석헌이야말로 『사상계』가 창간부터 내세운 예언자의 풍모에 부합한다.
Abstract
The Purpose of this paper is to re-consider the effect of the Christian theology on the liberal democracy of Sasangge, one of the former literary magazines in Korea. Emil Brunner discussed the subject of 'justice' and 'order' focusing on the expression of 'Image Dei' (God's image). Kim, Jae-jun, in his article published in Sasangge, had emphasized the meaning of 'freedom' through the theological concept of Image Dei such as Brunner had augured. The counter-discourse in the liberalism mainly put emphasis on 'Nation' (which had been advocated by Jang, Jun-ha) and 'Grassroots'(by Ham, Seok-heon) as a constituent unit for the community. In contrast, the liberal democracy of Kim, Jae-jun had been in an unique position in that Kim focused on 'the dignity and rights of individuals', which, of course, have to do with the acceptance of Brunner's theology. With the publication of many of articles of theologians, including Kim, Jae-jun, there, in earlier editions of Sasangge, would exist two theories, the Western Modernization and the Christian eschatology. In this regard, it is possible to reinterpret the short novels of Kim, Seong-han. The figure that harmoniously combined Christian religion with political practice was Ham, Seok-heon since 1956. In short, like Jang, Jun-ha who followed the theory of economic modernization, Ham, Seok-heon, who has led the democratic struggles against autocracy with an affiliation to liberal theologians like Kim, Jae-jun, coincide with the prophetic presence that Sasanggye put up as since its first edition.
